Office of the Bureau of Freedmen Refugees and abandoned lands for the County of Robeson Lumberton Aug 1865
This indenture made and entered into this 24th day of Aug 1865 between Stephen Smith of Robeson Co. of the one part and Louis Smith and Richmond Smith Freedmen of the other part witnesseth that for and in consideration of the delivery by the said Stephen Smith of the following quantity of corn to each family respectively with a suit of clothes to each one of the children [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] shoes and the balance of clothing these to the adult freedmen and women to wit to Richmond and his family ten bushels of corn, to Lewis and his family twelve bushels of corn with a week o rations of food, and six dollars in cash already paid the receipt of which the said Lewis hereby acknowledges, then the said freedmen agree to receive the above in full compensation for their labor from April 1865 to this date. and the said Freedmen agree to remove their families from the premises of said Stephen Smith within a week from date, taking all responsibility
