Office of Bureau of Freedmen for Robeson Co.
Lumberton Aug 24th /65

This indenture made and entered into this 24th day of Aug, 1865 between John A. Sanders planter of Robeson Co. of the one part, and Nelson McLaren and his wife Ann, Berry McIntyre and his wife Milly freedmen and women of the other part witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of seven dollars per month current money of the U. States being paid by the said John A. Sanders to the said Nelson McLaren and his wife and the said Berry McIntyre and his wife Milly respectively by families. Then they the said freedmen covenant and agree and by these presents do bind themselves severally in behalf of themselves and wives to render unto the said John A Sanders time and faithful service obeying all his lawful commands with the same submission and respect which they had done when the slave code was in full force and effect with the exception of punishments which are not inflicted on white laborers.
The said John A Sanders further agrees to furnish said freedmen and women
