Lumberton August 25th 1865

This indenture made and entered into this 25th day of August 1865 between J.F. Stephens of Robeson Co. of the one part and Elic Stephens and his wife Margaret Stephens Freedmen and woman of the other part witnesseth that for and in considerations of the said J.F. Stephens paying to the said Elic Stephens and his wife Margaret Stephens 16 Bushels of Corn {(8) Eight for each} from April 27th 1865 to January 1st 1866 and when they leave said J.F. Stephens to be well clothed and shod and to receive food & Medical attendance during this year and the said Elie Stephens and wife agrees covenants and by there present [[strikethrough]] granting [[/strikethrough]] to bind himself and wife to render unto the said J.F. Stephens true and faithful service as they have done while being held as slaves. The above compensation is for the present year.
