Office of Bureau of Refugees Stedman & Lumberton Robeson Co. N.C Sept 1, 1865 This agreement made and entered into this first day of September 1865 between J.H. Hedgepeth farmer of Robeson Co of the one part and Kit Barnes a colored freedman of said Co. of the other part. Witnesseth that the above named J.H. Hedgepeth agrees to give the aforesaid Kit Barnes for his labor during the present year (1865) ten bushels of corn and a fat hog, with his food , clothing, shoes, and medical attendance. And the said Kit Barnes on his part agrees to receive the above compensation in full of all demands to this date, and furthermore agrees to render with the said J.H. Hedgepeth true and faithful service as he did when a slave until the first of Jan. 1866. J.H. Hedgepeth Kit his x mark Barnes Approved and witnessed James Sinclair Agt Bureau.
