Contract for Labour

This indenture made and entered into on this 22nd day of Sept 1865 between Duncan McNair of the county of Robyson [[Robeson]] and State of North Carolina of the one part and the undersigned freed laborers of the second part. Witnesseth that the said laborers have agreed from this date to the first day of January 1866 to do all kinds of labour common to the farm, to work ten hours per day, to do their work faithfully, and to be respectful in their deportment, and they further agree that one half of their pay shall be retained by said Duncan McNair till the end of the year, and that amt retained shall be forfeited by a violation of the contract, and they further agree that the time lost by idleness or absence without leave shall not be paid for and the said Duncan 
McNair has agreed that he will furnish the said labourers with comfortable quarters, sufficient rations, and the amt of money per month, wich Hands affixed their respective names, that he will treat them kindly and encourage the establishment of schools for their children.
