Contract for Labor

This Indenture, Made and entered on the 24th day of Sept A D 1865 between D C McNeill of the county of Robeson. and State of North Carolina of the first part and the folowing named labores of the second. Namley, Dick $5 per month from 1st Sept till 1st of Nov. Hannah and two children for her vituals and cloths till first Jan. Hett at $2 per month till first Jan. Sim $1 per month till Jan first. Witnesseth That the said Laborers have agreed to do all kind of work. for the Said D. C. McNeill comon to the turpentine and farming buisiness of the country. to do their work faithfully. and to be respectiful in their deportment. And they fother agree that one half of their monthly pay. be retained by the Said D C McNeill till the expiration of their term of Service. And that the amount so retained shal be forfeited by a violation of this contract And they fother agree that time lost by idlness or absince shall not be paid for. And that the freedmen shall receive the usual ration, cloths and medical attention.

. On the 1880 U.S. Census - Jordan McLean of Robeson Co. I did find a Peter McNair who was about twenty in 1865. I think it looks like first initial is "P".
