This indenture made this the 1st day of December AD one thousand eight hundred and sixty five between Angus Bethune of the State of North Carolina and County of Robeson of the one part and William Bethune a freed laborer of the County and State aforesaid of the second part - Witnesseth that the said William Bethune hath covenanted and agreed to with the said Angus Bethune to labor (himself and his wife) and do all kind of work on the farm or otherwise from the 27th day of April 1865 until the 1st day of January 1866 - to work ten hours per day - to be respectful in their behavior and any loss of time either by idleness or absence or otherwise to be deducted from his wages - The said Augus Bethune agrees to furnish the said freed laborer - his wife and five children with comfortable quarters - one pair shoes each for himself and his wife - their food - the production of certain piece of ground allotted to him for the purpose of raising a crop for himself (the said piece of ground to receive the same cultivation as the said Angus Bethune crop) and two weeks for himself & wife to labor for themselves to procure their clothing.
