CONTRACT FOR LABOR

This Indenture, Made and entered into on the Twenty Third day of February, 1866, between Col'd John Rowland of the County of Robeson and State of North Carolina, of the first part, and the undersigned, free laborer of the second part:
Witnesseth, That the said [[crossed out]] laborers have [[/crossed out]] servant has agreed to work for the said John Rowland from this date to the First day of January, 1867 to do all kinds of labor common to [[crossed out]] the farms of the country [[/crossed out]] a public house; [[crossed out]] to work ten hours per day [[/crossed out]]; to do [[crossed out]] their [[/crossed out]] her work faithfully, and to be respectful in [[crossed out]] their [[/crossed out]] her deportment. And [[crossed out]] they [[/crossed out]] she further agrees that one half of [[crossed out]] their [[/crossed out]] her monthly pay shall be retained by the said John Rowland till the end of this contract, and that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by a violation of the contract. And [[crossed out]] they [[/crossed out]] she further agrees that time lost by idleness, or absence without leave, shall not be paid for.
And the said John Rowland has agreed that he will furnish the said [[crossed out]] laborers [[/crossed out]] servant with comfortable quarters, sufficient rations and food, and the amount of money per month which stands opposite [[crossed out]] their respective [[/crossed out]] her name; that he will treat [[crossed out]] them [[/crossed out]] her kindly, [[crossed out]] and encourage the establishment of school for their children.
