Contract For Labor
This Indenture, Made and entered into on the (8th) eight day of May, 1866, between Malcom P Currie of the county of Robeson and State of North Carolina, of the first part and the undersigned, free laborers, of the second part:
Witnesseth, That the said laborers, have agreed to work for the said Malcom P. Currie from this date until the crop is laid by and then all time between that and fodder geting is to be [[?]] by the party of the second part - and until the crop is all housed [[/strikethrough]] to the First day of January 186 [[/strikethrough]],  to do all kinds of labor common to the arms of the country; to work ten hours per day; to do their work faithfully, and to be respectful in their deportment. And they further agree that one half of their monthly pay shall be retained by the said Malcom P. Currie till the end of this contract, and that amount so retained shall be forfeited by a violation of this contract. And they further agree, that time lost by idleness, or absence without leave, shall not be paid for.
And the said Malcom P. Currie has agreed that he will furnish the said laborer [[/strikethrough]] s [[/strikethrough]] with comfortable quarters sufficient rations and food, and the amount of money per month which stands opposite their respective names; that he will trust them kindly, and encourage the establishment of schools for their children.
[[/strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] the said Malcom P. Currie further agrees to give the laborer twelve Bushels of corn and two pairs of pants and one shirt
