they should commit themselves, but after reassuring them to the contrary, I effected a hearing, and found there were (18) Eighteen able-bodied Freed-people on the Plantation (2) old and infirm, and about (15) fifteen children. All these people came to the Plantation during Feby 1865 and planted thereon last year. Some of them hold or say they do Certificates for land on this Plantation, but for some unaccountable reason [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] none would produce them! and those representing to hold the Certificates did not give their names as registered in the books where those to whom Grants were given are recorded. I could therefore obtain to-day nothing definite in relation to the Grants of land given on this Plantation. This Plantation consists of about 700 acres and fifty acres were cultivated by the people last year. All these people are strangers to this Place, coming from the main land.
