17. Council Tree, Coryell's Ferry, New Hope, Pa. By Joseph Pickett. Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Moore Price. Pickett was greatly interested in the Revolutionary history of his town. This represents Washington and his horse, at the tree where it is said the Battle of Trenton was planned. Treatment of the massive tree has often been compared to Henri Rousseau's work.

18. Mount Vernon. Gift of the Walter S. Nichols' family to the Newark Museum.

19. American Landscape. By L. Whitney. This painting has been compared to the work of the early Flemish painter, Peter Breughel, as well as to that of certain moderns.

WOOD SCULPTURE MISCELLANEOUS

25. Head of a Girl. By Alexander Ames. From collection of John J. Cunningham, Jr. Carved and polychromed oak. One of three portraits of sisters, by the same man, who worked around Buffalo, 1845-1850. Similar in spirit to best of primitive paintings of children.

26. Bust of a Girl. Ship's figurehead, designed to pitch forward. From a boat which sailed Long Island Sound. Found near Bridgeport, Conn. Its simplicity and calm suggest Greek sculpture.

27. Indian Squaw. Cigar store figure, found near Rockland, Me.

28. Lady in Chair. Found near Ephrata, Pa. Characteristic Pennsylvania Dutch work-gay, solid, and honest.
