"Respectfully returned with the information that this building is very necessary for a school as there is no other suitable one in the vicinity which can be used for this purpose; that consists of two large rooms, and is used both as a school and dwelling house and that a rent of eighteen dollars a month from the first of November 1865 would not be deemed unreasonable. The rule which has been adopted by this office, is not to pay any back rent for buildings used by the Board of Education without a written lease of the same,"

"Respectfully returned with reference to the enclosed orders. The schools of Baton Rouge, and suburbs, are exclusively under the contract of Mr. J C Tucker subject to this office and the authority granted by Ex 3 of SO 2 Current series from this office, is not nor has been intended in any manner to effect his authority in the premises. Instructions to this effect will be immediately furnished Chapl. Chapman Agent Div. 4."

refrains - top letters "-frains" put on preceding page. 27 24 is correctly entered. The two letters, 24 and 27, deal with the same person or subject. Saw the same thing on the previous page = Mrs. R.S. Wilham. J J MOSS, not MASS. Look him up online. He was the a Chaplain, and has some great info on him. (T1) - letter is from TUCKER - thus the "T", and the first one, thus the "1". You may have seen (B8), for instance, on the previous page.
