Board of Education for Freedmen,
Department of the Gulf,

New Orleans, June 20th 1864.

General

The Board of Education respectfully report as follows.

In the Parish of St Charles, two schools are in operation, and five more ready for Teachers.

In the Parish of St Bernard, Five Schools are in operation, and two more ready for Teachers.

In the Parish of Plaquemine, One school in operation, and one more ready for a Teacher.

In Parish of St John, Five Schools are in operation, and Six more are in readiness for Teachers but the Planters refuse to board them.

In Parish of St James, schools are in readiness in every school district, nine in number, but the Agent reports that in no case in that parish can he obtain board for a Teacher, in consequence of the existing hostility to establishment
