Office State Superintendent of Public Education, La.
New Orleans, Dec 12th 1864.

Maj. Genl. Hurlbut. Comr. Dept. of the Gulf

General,

Mr. Bennie and Mr. Lara, School Directors of the parish of Terrebonne, represent to me that two of the public school houses of that parish, that is one in the village of Houma, and another near Dannie's plantation, have, for several months past, been occupied by colored schools, under the care of the "Board of Education for Freedmen."

The two gentlemen above named, state also that the citizens there are very anxious for the opening of their customary public schools, and I very respectfully request that their school houses be restored to them. As to any expenses incurred, that will be refunded as soon as taxes are collected.

I am very respectfully
your most obt sevt
John Mac Nair
