My dear sir,
In a former communication with you we spoke of the present condition of the New Orleans School of Medicine and you expressed a desire to be made fully acquainted with its history. It was founded and incorporated by an Act of the Legislature on the 9th April 1856 and was empowered to grant diplomas & to have the same privileges in the Charity Hospital as the University of Louisiana. Its Professors were Drs Fenner, Chopin, Beard, Peniston, Austen Flint, Austen Flint Jr, Bruckill, Howard Senett & Gareau. Of these Dr. Peniston is dead, Drs Flint are in New York, and the rest of the Faculty except myself are beyond its lines. The state granted the college a sum of twenty thousand dollars to complete it and according to its charter, it reverts to the state at the end of ninety nine years, the professions only desire remuneration from the income of their choice. It is therefore in all respects a state institution, and as I respectfully submit not liable to compensation. It has never been used for any purpose except that of Medical instruction, and lecture were given as long as students came. Last year
