I was ordered to deliver the keys to a Mr Strong who in conjunction with a Mr. Hubbs were empowered by General Banks to use it as a school for colored persons. Mr Hubbs afeared both myself & Dr Alexander that they avoid only use the lecture theatre abd that nothing should be removed from the building and nothing destroyed, and that the utmost care should be taken of the property. On going to the college some ten months ago, I find that large quantities of valuable pieces of apparatus, have been taken away, that contrary to the directions of Dr Alexander, rooms have been occupied which he ordered to be left intact, and that spoliation is constantly occurring. I found in a pawnbrokers shop, a piece of apparatus belonging to the college, but can obtain no trace of others. I would respectfully submit that the property belongs either to the college or to the United States, but certainly not to irresponsible negroes or their teachers. The chemical apparatus is my private property, and as I am about to open a class in class in chemistry, I would like to have permission to remove what remains of it as without it I cannot perform the operations repair. If you can assist me
You will most oblige
Yours vry faithfully
