Port Hudson La.,
Feb. 27th., 1865

My dear Wheelock,
Yours of the 18th should have been answered before, but our regiment has been in daily expectation being moved to Algiers in order to join Hawkin's division of cold. troops for the field. It looks now as if we were to be left behind on account of the need of the regiment at P.H. in the absence of the 76th. which went yesterday

You did not know evidently that Gen. Andrews is no longer in command of Baton Rouge dist. which includes Port Hudson & Morganzia. Gen. A. is at New Orleans we hear to become Chf. of Staff to Gen. Canby. Gen. Herman relieves him at Baton Rouge.

Lt. Col. Merriam is of the 73d U.S.C.I. which has been at Morganzia for some time but yesterday passed down on the way to the field. Col. M. being on board. The 76th also came down. Indeed Morganzia is essentially

[[left margin]] By the bye, Gen. Andrews has nothing to say about things here now and Gen. Hamlin now in command might be more favorably disposed that way  I think it would be more influential for you to address Hd. Qrs. on the subject in your official capacity  You might refer to me if you choose as acquainted with the operations of the board & happy to communicate anything
