essentially breaking up. It has never been more than a place of rendezvous. There probably will remain but one or two regiments to garrison the small fort on the river.

Of course I would & will do anything to assist you & honor you for your self-sacrifice into the bargain. I do not, however, under the changed circumstances recommend attempting anything there: though I will try to ascertain the address of Hd. Qrs. there & at Baton Rouge so that you may address those in command. Of course I should be unknown at M. and could address the Officer in command on the subject much less properly than you. Indeed I fancy you have got into a little boggle in locating me & Gen Andrews at Morganzia. No matter: if I could do anything I would with pleasure.

I have got mustered in - to date for report for duty - all right. Thank Van for his good offices in facing the lion in his den.
