The dependence of the helicopter carriers on subsidy is illustrated also by the extremely high breakeven load factors which have pertained in the past (Table III-25). Given the operating costs, revenue yields, scale of operation and the limited capacity of available equipment, the industry break-even point on transportation revenues alone has been greater than the capacity of the aircraft. With the high frequency Midway-O'Hare operation, CHA was able to achieve breakeven load factors of under 100 per cent. In the 2nd Quarter, 1963 LAA and NYA were able to operate with breakeven load factors of less than 100 per cent for the first time. With higher revenue yields and lower unit costs, SFOH experienced a breakeven load factor of 45.3 per cent on total operating expenses.
