SESSION II
the jumbo jet

3 The Boeing 747

JAMES HORAN
Commercial Airplane Division, The Boeing Company

Airport and airline facility planners face a very difficult task. Air passenger transportation could easily triple in the next ten years. This means that passenger handling facilities will have to be greatly expanded and improved within the near future. Unfortunately no single solution can resolve this growth problem because of the varying needs of different airlines and airports throughout the world. However, aircraft manufacturers can significantly assist facility planners by designing aircraft which not only transport large numbers of passengers, but which also contribute to increasing efficiency in terminal passenger handling.

The need for a large transport aircraft will be considered and the factors which affect airport handling from the passenger and freight points of view will be discussed. Also, problems of the landing gear in relation to runway strength and pavement stresses will be considered. The special problems of maneuvering aircraft of this size and the parking and taxying clearances needed will be described, and the requirements for ground serving equipment will be discussed.

Concepts for optimum utilization at the airport will also be presented.
