solely devoted to the advancement of science. During this 148-period, the Academy has kept abreast of the latest progress in every area of science. It has always avoided over-specialization. Half of its members represent industry. One in five comes from abroad. Its roster is a cross-section of leading academic and industrial research scientists, corporate officers with broad research responsibilities, government research scientists, teachers and laymen. More than 35 of the world's living Nobel Laureates in Science are Academy members.

In addition, the Academy conducts 20 to 30 major international conferences annually. The average attendance is between 500 and 1,000 scientists per conference. Thus, each year, The New York Academy of Sciences' conferences draw a total of attendance of 16,000 to 20,000 scientists from industrial, educational and governmental research institutions throughout the world. And, each year, Academy publications have a total world-wide circulation of 1.3 million copies.
