Stoughton March 8th 1947
Dear Doris
Every day the sun comes warm & pleasant so theres but little snow left. our last snow that was predicted went out to sea for which we felt very thankful. we have had but little all winter & I hope it still continues. it seems good to go outside to sift my ashes on bare ground. the wind has been the worst to contend with for that blows in the cold. it would seem good to ride off to see the country. I am looking forward to see the houses in the center where the fires went through them. they haven't been touched I hear. I am expecting Doris out this week end & guess the change may do her good. althoug [[although]] she has good times at college with the girls her age & hope she forms nice acquaintances the same as you did at her age. do you ever hear of Ruth Walker & Mildred Metcalf?
We are going to have four quarter of lamb & a very small piece of beef. so we shall have good food over Sunday when Doris comes, if she does come. she hasn't written to the contrary. it seems lonesome when she goes back over Sunday night. I am reading the last book of the White
