Dear Doris 

Wish you a happy new year. Today has begun with a cloudy morning and a promise of more snow. With temperatures of 10° above going is very bad although they sanded the streets yesterday. And we put ashes down the front walk for she had to go downtown to do errands for me and had her hair done so she hired a taxi and went about noon paid my electric light and telephone bills and took down the library book where she met Mary and Jackie McGarvey who brought her home and Jackey took her book as she was going into the library with his book she was saved from climbing the terrible icy steps which she was dreading.

The village was roped off where that terrible fire was which happened towards Monday morning they are investigating the cause. A terrible night for it to so icy. I don't dare to step my feet outside its too dangerous. We are lucky to have our coal and oil to keep us warm this weather and food to eat.
