down your stories——now you can write them down three times as fast!

MR. PARKER
But I don't know how to type!

THEO
With the money we're gonna be having. I can hire somebody to teach you!

ADELE
What money you going to have?

THEO
We're going into business, baby——right here in the barbershop!

MR. PARKER
Theo——

THEO
(Paying no attention.) We're going to sell bootleg whiskey, numbers, and——

ADELE
You're what!?

MR. PARKER
Theo——

THEO
You heard me, and if you don't like it you can pack your bags and leave!

ADELE

MR. PARKER

ADELE

ADELE

ADELE

MR. PARKER
The lease on this house has my signature, not yours!

ADELE
I'm not going to let you do this!

MR. PARKER

ADELE
(Turns sharply to THEO.) You put him up to this!

MR. PARKER
Nobody puts me up to anything I don't want to do! These two boys have made it up in their minds they're not going to work for nobody but themselves, and the thought in my mind is why should they! I did like you said, I went downtown, and it's been a long time since I did that but you're down there every day and you oughta know by now that I am too old a man to ever dream I...could overcome the dirt and filth they got waiting for me down there. I'm surprised at you, that you would have so little care in you to shove me into the middle of that mob.

ADELE
You can talk about caring? What about Mama? She died working for you! Did you ever stop to think about that!
