THEO
You can tell Blue I don't like standing over that stove all day, that I don't like him promising me helpers that don't show up, There are a lot of things I don't go for, like Pop taking off and not showing up for two days. I make this whiskey, I sell it, I keep books, I peddle numbers and those damn targets. And I don't like you standing around here all day not lifting a finger to help me!

BOBBY
(taking a big puff on his cigar.) I don't hear you.

THEO
Look at you - all decked out in your new togs. Look at me: I haven't been out of these dungarees since we opened this place up.

BOBBY
(Jumps out of chair.) I don't wanta hear nothing! You do what you wanta do, and leave me alone!

THEO
What am I supposed to be, a work mule or something?

BOBBY
You're the one that's so smart——you can't answer your own stupid questions?

THEO
You done let Blue turn you against me, huh?

BOBBY
You ask the questions and you gon' answer them——but for now, stop blowing your breath in my face!

THEO
You make me sick. (Moves into back room. Sits on bed.)

ADELE
(Enters from upstairs, dressed in a smart, Saks Fifth Avenue outfit.) Getting tired already, Theo?

THEO
No, just once in a while I'd like to have some time to see one of my women!

ADELE
You being the big industrialist and all that, I thought you

had put girls off for a year or two!

THEO
Get away from me. (Crosses to desk and sits.)

ADELE
I must say, however——it is sure a good sight to see you so wrapped up in work. I never thought I'd live to see the day, but——

THEO
Don't you ever have anything good to say?

ADELE
I say what I think and feel. I'm honest.

THEO
Honest? You're just hot because Pop decided to do something my way for a change.

ADELE
That's a joke, when you haven't seen him for two whole days. Or do you know where he has gone to practically every night since you opened up this little store.

THEO
He's out having a little spot for himself. What's wrong with that? He hasn't had any fun in a long time.

ADELE
Is fun all you can think of? When my father doesn't show up for two days, I worry.

THEO
You're not worried about nobody but yourself——I'm on to your game. You'd give anything in the world to go back just the way we were, because you liked the idea of us being dependent on you. Well, that's all done with, baby. We're on our own. So don't worry yourself about Pop. When Blue gets here tonight with our money, he'll be here!

ADELE
If my eyes and ears are clear, then I would say that Father isn't having the kind of money troubles these days that he must rush home for your payday.
