he wants, and then he's gon' split your ass wide open!

ADELE
(Turns sharply at door.) Theooooooooooo!

(Pause.)
You talk like that to me because you don't know how to care for the fact that I am your sister.

THEO
But why are you trying to break us up? Why?

ADELE
I don't have to waste that kind of good time. I can wait for you to bust it up yourself. Good night! (Slams the door behind herself.)

(THEO stands with a long, deep look in his eyes, then goes down cellar. MR. PARKER steps into the shop, all dapper, dressed up to a fare-thee-well, holding a gold-top cane in one hand and a book in the other, BOBBY stares at him, bewildered.)

BOBBY
What's that you got on?

MR. PARKER
What does it look like?

BOBBY
Nothing.

MR. PARKER
You call this nothing!

BOBBY
Nothing-- I mean, I didn't mean nothing when I asked you that question.

MR. PARKER
Where's Theo?

BOBBY
In the back, working.

MR. PARKER
Good! Shows he's got his mind stretched out for good and great things. (Hangs up hat and puts away cane.)

BOBBY
He's been stretching his mind out to find out where you been.

MR. PARKER
Where I been is none of his business. Blue is the to think about. It's pay day, and I wanta know, where the hell is he! (Checks his watch, taps BOBBY, indicating he should step down from chair.)

BOBBY
(Hops down from chair, PARKER sits.) Whatcha reading?

MR. PARKER
A book I picked up yesterday. I figured since I'm in business I might as well read a businessman's book.

BOBBY
Let me see it. (Takes the book in his hand.) The Thief's Journal, by Jean Gin-nett. (Fingering through pages.) Is it a good story?

MR. PARKER
So far--

BOBBY
(Hands it back.) What's it all about?

MR. PARKER
A Frenchman who was a thief.

BOBBY
Steal things?

MR. PARKER
Uh-huh.

BOBBY
Where did he get all that time to write a book?

MR. PARKER
Oh, he had the time all right, 'cause he spent most of it in jail.

BOBBY
Some thief!
