if you had to, you would have to wake up, announce that you was turning over, and then you go back to sleep!

BOBBY
What!

MR.PARKER
Just like this. (Illustrating physically.). "Number 4 turning over!" But that made all the chains on the other convicts rattle, so they had to turn over too and shout: "Number 5 turning over! Number 6 turning over! Number 7!"

THEO
Why don't you stop it!"

MR. PARKER
I ain't lying!

BOBBY
Is that all?

MR. PARKER
Yeah, and I'm gon' get Adele to type that up on my typewriter! (Goes to the window.) Now where the hell is that Blue Haven!

MR. JENKINS
(Rushing in.) Did he show up yet?

MR. PARKER
Naw, and when he does, I'm——

MR. JENKINS
I told you I didn't trust that boy——who knows where he is! Well, I'm going out there and get him! (Starts back out.)

MR. PARKER
(grabs him by the arm.) Now don't go out there messing with Blue, Jenkins! If there's anybody got a reason for being mad with him, it's me. Now take it easy. When he gets here, we'll all straighten him out. Come on, sit down and let me beat you a game one time. (Takes board of quickly.)

BOBBY
Tear him up, Pop!

MR. JENKINS
(Pause.)
Okay, you're on. (Moves toward MR. PARKER and the table.) It's hopeless. I been playing your father for three solid years, and he has yet to beat me one game!

MR. PARKER
Yeah! But his luck done come to past!

MR. JENKINS
My luck ain't come to past, 'cause my luck is skill. (Spelling the word out.) S-K-I-L-L.

MR. PARKER
(shakes up the can.) Come on now, Jenkins, let's play the game. Take one. (MR. JENKINS pulls out a checker.) You see there, you get the first move.

MR. JENKINS
You take me for a fool, Parker, and just for that I ain't gon' let you get a king.

MR. PARKER
Put your money where your lips is. I say I'm gon' win this game!

MR. JENKINS
I don't want your money, I'm just gon' beat you!

MR. PARKER
I got twenty dollars here to make a liar out of you! (Slams down a twenty-dollar bill on the table.) Now you doing all the bragging about how I never beat you but I'm valiant enough to say that, from here on in. you can't win air, and I go twenty dollars up on the table to back it up.

MR. JENKINS
Oh, well, he ain't satisfied with me beating him all the time for sport. He wants me to take his money too.

MR. PARKER
But that's the difference?

MR. JENKINS
What kind of difference?

MR. PARKER
We're playing for money, and I don't think you can play.
