MR. PARKER
That's exactly what I'm trying to do!

GIRL
(Rising.) Don't yell at me!

MR. PARKER
All right. I tell you what: I'm kinda tired, let's just lie down for a while and talk. I ain't gon' try nothing.

GIRL
Russell——

MR. PARKER
May the Lord smack me down this minute into hell——I swear I won't do nothing.

GIRL
What are the three biggest lies men tell to women, Russell?

MR. PARKER
I ain't just any man——I'm the man you gon' spend your life with.

GIRL
Okay, Russell, we'll lie down, but you've got to keep your word. If I'm the girl you want to marry, you've got to learn to keep your word. (They lie on bed. To her surprise, PARKER is motionless, seemingly drifting off to sleep. After a moment she takes the initiative and begins love-making. He responds, and once his passion has reached an aggressive peak she breaks off abruptly.) Where do you get these things you sell to people?

MR. PARKER
What are you talking about?

GIRL
You know what I'm saying. I overheard you tell Mr. Jenkins you suspected your son was robbing stores.

MR. PARKER
You heard no such thing!

GIRL
(Desperately.) Where do they keep the stuff?

 MR. PARKER
Now, baby, you've got to relax and stop worrying about things like that! (Pulls her by the shoulders. She does not resist.) Come here. (He pulls her down to the bed, takes her into his arms and kisses her, reaching again for the hem of her dress.)

GIRL
(Struggling, but weakening to his ardor.) Russell, you said you wouldn't do nothing!

MR. PARKER
I ain't! I just want to get a little closer to you!

GIRL
Russell, not here!

MR. PARKER
Just let me feel it a little bit!

GIRL
You swore to God, Russell! (THEO comes in the front door and heads toward back room.)

MR. PARKER
I ain't gon' do nothing!

GIRL
(Hears THEO.) Russell! Russell! Somebody is out there!

MR. PARKER
(Jumps up quickly. THEO stands before him.) What are you doing here?

THEO
The question is, what are you doing?

MR. PARKER
I have been having a private talk with a good friend of mine. Now get out of here!

(GIRL jumps up, moving past MR. PARKER).

MR. PARKER
(Stopping her.) Where are you going?
