Copy of Contract made the 23" day Jan'y 67 between Mr R Parnell & Hay-wood Thomas

This Argument made the 23" day of Jan'y 1867 between M R Parnell of Granville County of the one party and Freedmen Haywood Thomas (for himself and his three sons Daison & Spencer aged about 14 yrs and Roden aged about 12 yrs) Funsy Thomas, Isaac Thomas (aged about 19 yrs) and Henry Thomington of the other party.

The said parties of the second part agree to assist and work for said Parnell in working a crop on the land in Granville County, now untied by him from Mr. William Greene, to work faithfully & industriously under the directions of said Parnell, and not to leave the plantation, without his consent,--also to feed themselves and families.

And the said Parnell agrees to furnish to good hands, and the tools and teams necessary to carry on the work on said plantation, to feed the teams & pay the shop a/c], and also in consideration of the faithful performance of this agreement by the parties of the second part to give to them one third of all the corn shucks & fodder oats peas and one fifth of all the cotton made this year (first deducting from the whole crop made one fourth for the rent of the land.) Also to pay them for harvesting his crop, of wheat ten bushels, if the crop be good, and five bushels if only tolerable. Also to permit them to leave at such times as the crop may not require their attention, in order that they may work for themselves
