Coleraine, N.C.

Lieut. Foote

Sir:
A poor unfortunate negro boy, who is a cripple & therefore unable to support himself, came to my house about two months ago, almost naked & [[strikethrough]] hungry [[/strikethrough]] starving; pity for him constrained me to clothe & feed him, and he has been here ever since. I sent him to Lieut. Dodge at Edenton, & wrote to him to which he replied & returned the boy - saying that he could do nothing for him; that he was not in his jurisdiction &c. — that he was in yours. I hope therefore sir, you will do what you can for him; if only to furnish him provisions. If I was able, tho' he has no claims whatever on me, I would take care of him.
