SUBJECT: Women's Flying Clothing

A. Purpose:

1. To test available Wasp intermediate flying clothes under actual flight conditions for determination of the best possible flying outfit--including suit, gloves, boots, and helmet--for constant wear or at least three hours; duration at or about 0 C.

B. Factual Data:

1. Tests have been conducted at this laboratory by two members of the WASPs.

2. Pertinent tests can be divided into three main types:

a. Cold tests about -14°C to 0 C in nose compartment of B-17 at 35,000 feet for about two hours.

b. Flight tests in single engine airplanes with varying degrees of open hatch, at temperatures inside the cockpit between +4°C and -4°C, for duration of about 2 1/2 hours, at altitudes between 11,000 and 2,500 feet.

(1). Cold tests for protection against 0°C temperature with moderate wind.

(2). Dexterity and suitability tests for flying suit, gloves and boots.

(3). Wind tests for wind resistance of flying suits.

c. Cold chamber tests for rate of cooling and wind resistance of clothes.

(1). Walk and service test of WASP boots in muddy and normal conditions.

(2). Slip-grip test of WASP boot on wet airplane wing.

3. Clothes tested:

a. Flying suits.
