before they would even begin to consider enlisting. Besides, they liked to "think it over', women-like. It was often eight or nine months after an AAF recruiting team had swept through a town in a whirlwind recruiting effort, therefore, that the AAF representative in the local recruiting office finally got Miss Mary Smith actually to sign on the dotted line. And all during those eight or nine months the AAF WAC recruiter's quiet way of doing her job at the recruiting office, of participating in the Woman's Club meetings, of going to church on Sunday, of acting in general like any nice young girl in the community - her way of doing all these things had helped to sell the community on WAC, and had made it possible for Miss Mary Smith to enlist in the army, with the full approval of her parents and her home town.

Air Forces, eager to do a job with typical Air Force steamroller tactics and steamroller success, wanted to blanket a town with advertisements, stories, rallies, speeches - and ran head-on into War Manpower Commission controls on intensive recruiting in tight labor areas; or national governmental attempts to budget precious radio time allotted to army, navy, and similar appeals among the most pressing of the many war projects; or the desire of national organizations like philanthropic clubs or groups of advertisers to give greatest force and direction to their contributions to the war effort by seeing that the war projects of their member groups were in harmony with the particular war project they had chosen - or
