On 20 December The Adjutant General announced (4) that AAF personnel on loan to the recruiting service would be returned to AAF by the end of January, even though such recruits as continued to enlist would still be allowed to choose the branch (Air, Ground, or Service) in which they wished to serve. The best-laid plans of mice and men, however, are sometimes countermanded, as was this one when an Adjutant General TWX went hastily to the field on 6 January 1945 rescinding the 20 December letter, stating that the recruiting service had been instructed to recruit much-needed WAC medical technicians for duty in hospitals, and that all AAF and AGF recruiting personnel still on duty in Service Commands would be retained for the duration of the new campaign.

All AAF Recruiting Closes

While the medical recruitment campaign was in force, recruits - medical, clerical, or in any other skill - could continue to enlist for service in the AAF, if they wished to do so; but the medical recruitment campaign reached its goal in March, weeks ahead of schedule, and The Adjutant General announced (1) that, effective 1 May 1945, the WAC Recruiting Service would be dissolved, AAF and AGF recruiting personnel would be returned to commands, the army would accept only gen-
