SECTION V

CONCLUSION

During the course of World War II many people said many things about the WAC.

The generals said:

General of the Army H.H. Arnold, Commanding General, AAF: "We of the Army Air Forces wish to extend congratulations on the outstanding performance of the Corps in furthering the war effort. Wacs now hold key administrative positions at more than 200 air bases throughout the world." (1)

General Carl Spaatz, Commanding General, U.S. Strategic Air Forces in Europe: "The WAC has been of inestimable value to our Air Forces Operating against Germany. Its members have worked devotedly, often at arduous tasks requiring exceptional performance. Their success as a part of the team is a matter of pride to all of us." (2)

One general, speaking a little wistfully and holding his head in his hand while a battle raged around him as to whether Wacs in his command might ride in airplanes: "You know, I'm old enough to remember when this army thought it could run itself without women soldiers ..."
