Miss Susan, Marie Scott

Dear Miss Scott:

President Kennedy has asked this office to thank you for your recent letter regarding the outlook for women as astronauts in the national space program.

Many women are employed in the space program -- some of them in extremely important scientific posts-- but we have no present plans to employ women in space flights. There are no women pilots, to our knowledge, who have the degree of scientific and flight training required for the success of these missions. Since there is no shortage of qualified male candidates, there is no need to train women for space flight at this stage in the program.

We appreciate your interest in this vital national effort.

Sincerely,

O. B. Lloyd, Jr.
