who has arrived the day previous with only a couple of hours flight, wants to show us the sights right away. He nearly walked our legs off in Paris the afternoon we arrived, so Doris & I have grown very wise and insist on going to bed for a little while as soon as we arrive. He came home at 2 o'clock and routed us out and we have been tramping from Hyde Park to Piccadilly and all about the centre of things,- Regent St. Trafalgar Square with its iron lions about Nelson's statue, down to the House of Parliament with its huge tower with the famous clock Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey and Whitehall and 10 Downing St and finally when we were ready to drop stopped for a pot of tea & bread & butter and then refreshed continued for a while longer. Now we are back at the Hotel where we are allowed to rest till 7 - - it being 6.30 now! when Sid wants to go out and eat.

He is busy reading all the letters. We had 2 from Helen & Geoff, 1 from Sophy telling me of Museum news since Barber's death. She said that they were keeping a picture of him and one taken of his room as he had it, for me. And 1 from Fred Southworth who broke a little bone in his ankle & had been rather off his feet but he had been over to play canasta with Mrs Colcord & Miss Hawks. He has been frequenting their place quite a bit, - being only across the street from him. Helen wrote that little Denny has been adopted leaving an "aching void." She herself had Marion & the baby with her in Wash DC & wrote what a humid summer they were having. I hope your country is nicer - and not too cold & rainy now. And I hope Mrs B's knee is recovering. You didn't mention it so I take it she is getting about. Too bad about Gertrude. Is there no hope? I am glad you have the Bride girls in the neighborhood anyhow. They are good ones to have about, and there will be no noisy young ones to disturb your slumbers.

It is pleasant & sunny here in London today & much milder than in Amsterdam or the northern cities of Stockholm & Copenhagen. The air is softer and damper - not so crisp. It rained all the while we were at Amsterdam, shower after shower with occasional sunny periods, and we wore our heavy clothes. Everyone there wears raincoats all summer.
