Sir;
Your letter bearing date July 29th containing the horrible recital of outrages and murders perpetrated upon the defenceless Freedman of Clarke, Choctaw, Washington & Marengo Counties is received, and shall obtain immediate attention. Your promptness in reporting this condition of affairs is commendable.
Action such as is demanded by every ounce of justice & humanity must, you will readily perceive, be based upon af-

fidavit. You assure me that you "have in full the history of the cases referred to" & can support your statements by testimony irrefragable. Please give your early attention to obtaining such affidavits and the guilty parties shall learn that the Govt which has given to your millions of slaves the right of Freedman is abundantly able to protect them in the enjoyment of that freedom. Upon the  presentation to this office of proper testimony these parties shall be overtaken & prosecuted to the extent of the power of the Government.
Please select some good Lieutenant with detail of twenty men to go to Pollard, a station on the Mobile & Great Northern R.R. to preserve the peace & rights of the community. Send the name of this Lieut to this office.
