Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of an appointment as Major General of Volunteers by Brevet and to accept the same to date from the 31st day of October 1865. I return herewith my oath of office. I am 31 years of age, was born in Columbus, Ohio, and am a resident of the State of Ohio. Gardner Asst Supt of Freedmen at Selma. They are now on duty there assigned by the District Commander but the Regiment having been transferred to the Talladega District a detail from you is necessary.
