General:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Col Woodhull's communication of 24 ult in which you are pleased to express your approbation of what you saw of the workings of the Bureau in this state, an expression deeply gratifying to me. Your commendation of the officer who met you at Jackson is equally pleasing to that gentleman and an additional satisfaction to myself.

It was also gratifying to know that my recent visit to Washington had your approval. I have already more fully expressed my regrets at the draw-backs which it necessarily involved and particularly that I did not see you. In this connection I beg to call your attention to the written application and explanation of a proposal to rent lands which I forwarded to you before I left here and afterwards placed in the hands of the Secretary of War. It sets out somewhat at length what I desire and am endeavoring to set on foot here.

The draft for five thousand dollars ($5000 00) which you were kind enough to send bridges over an interval which was interrupting our credit and our usefulness. I trust before it is exhausted we shall be on an independent basis.
