Mr Knox had no more right to inflict corporal punishment on the girl Mohala than he would have to inflict the same on you if you had taken a case of his and had not presented it in accordance with his views. The negroes are free. Any corporal punishment inflicted on them is just as much of an assault as though inflicted on a white man. The Justice of the Peace. Mr Smith must have strange ideas of right and justice when in the face of the testimony that Mr Knox had beaten the girl he orders that she be returned to fulfill his contract and permits the assault to pass unpunished. The case need not be revived but further complaints of this kind will lead to an investigation of Mr Smith's action. Please notify him of this.
