Capt A. Clark
Union Springs Ala,

Captain:
I enclose and order assigning to duty as Asst Supt Refugees. Freedmen &c for Macon Co. This order is made at the suggestion of Lt Col Geddes who thought you would be willing to act.
I enclose you copies of orders and will send you instructions from time to time. I enclose you a memorandum of an alleged assault committed near Union Springs.
As the civil Magistrates have denied justice the case will if found as stated be brought before a Military Commission. To this end the General wishes you to arrest Augustus Foreman and hold a preliminary examination. If he has cut and assaulted the the negro "Bob" you will hold him for trial by Commission which will be appointed as soon as a report is received from you.

this communication has with him a negro woman who is an important witness. It will be necessary to secure the witnesses as when it is discovered that Foreman is to be tried an attempt will probably be made to spirit them away.
The General relies on your action and judgement in this affair to bring this party to justice if he is guilty. Please make the preliminary examination at once. You will act in your proceedings the same as if you were a Provost Marshall.
Very Respectfully
