public sentiment, so that the schools could be carried on anywhere without damage or interruption.  That if the schools were removed to the churches which remain, the faith of the City should be pledged to their freedom from molestation, if need be by a perpetual guard.

2. That the sentiments of the Dean were not those of the Faculty, or indeed his own, he having prepared his resignation as expression of the difference, and declared his regret at what he had done.

3. That the College was greatly needed for purposes of repair and occupation, it being designed to occupy it for Medical instruction as soon as the repairs are completed, in obedience to a pressing demand from all portions of the State. 

On my part the conference resulted in a promise to recommend their application to you with a presentation of the facts, which perhaps show an opportunity for permanent and amicable relations worth more to us than the occupancy of the building with it concomitant results.

This will be handed you by Capt E.P. Graves, A.Q.M. who has consented to undertake the management of the business connected with the transfer of property belonging to the late rebel Govt. to this Bureau, and the provisions of Executive Order of Nov 11th 1865.

Capt Graves has my full confidence and is authorized by me to act according to his judgement in the premises.  He is directed to consult with you in reference to the modifications of your order in regard to the delivery of the property sold at Selma on the 15 ult. and I respectfully request that you will give him such assistance as may be in your power, and consistent with your duties in the performance of his duties.
