230 Provisional Government, to join in asking you that he be appointed Collector of the Post of Mobile. This I could not primarily do, as I had made the same request for an old army comrade. But as it is thought my opinion may be serviceable, I cheerfully state that Mr Garrett, after long service as a public officer, is now returned to the State Senate by his fellow citizens as a testimonial of their confidence. And further that he is a Union man whom the loss of property has not alienated from the Government, and his urbanity and industry have given him a high capacity for usefulness.
