Before taking any action in this office in the matter I wish to have your statement and have the honor to request that you will forward it at once.

General:
Your telegram of the 9th inst was recd this A.M. I had ordered Col Robinson immediately on hearing of the church burning at Mobile to retain the building until you could be heard from and wrote you to that effect. I sent him this morning a copy of your Telegram.

The Mayor has offered a reward of $1000 for the apprehension of the Incendiary but I do not suppose that any thing will be effected thereby. The scheme for the destruction of the church was well matured. Immediately rear of the church was frame Ware house. The parties owning it erected a high brick wall between their ware house and the church and the night that it was finished the church was burned.

Capt McIntosh A.Q.M. was at the fire. He tells me that the Fire Dept was not in full force and could easily have extinguished the fire when they first reached the ground but that they played no water on it, throwing it only on the brick wall and the warehouse. A great many citizens were present but instead of endeavoring to extinguish the fire they rejoiced over it. The "Times" condemns the course of the Mayor in offering the reward.
