Dear Sir

I am in receipt of your note of the 20th instant confirming the intelligence we already deplored of your lamented Father's death.

Permit me to offer whatever of sincere condolences is warranted by a brief experiance of his worth and kindness. It is thought that the intelligence, instructions received at this office from the the Treasury Department will enables us, to make a settlement with the agent of your Father such as would be satisfactory to him were he living. It would perhaps be well for you to be here. Any item such as you refer to in which you are personally interested, will be fairly and properly considered.

Your obedient servant,
(Signed) Wager Swayne
