Woods Chas R. Bvt Maj Genl
Comdg Dept of Ala
Mobile Ala.

General
I have the honor to request that the Q.M. Dept at Huntsville may be continued for the present if practicable.

In moving the supplies for the destitute of North Alabama, a large amount of transportation is required and as the Supt of the Bureau depends on the Q.M. Dept for such transportation the breaking up of the Dept will materially interfere with the operation of the Bureau.

A requisition for transportation has been forwarded to Washington for approval. If the transportation required should be transferred to this Dept then the necesity [[necessity]] for the continuance of the present system will cease.

Very Respectfully
Your obdt Servant

General
At the time of receipt of your dispatch of May 10th asking whether I desired you to permit the U.S. Marshall to take possession of the blockade running Steamers, I was unable to make definite answer as Col Beecher was just expected back with fuller information; I was sorry he did not see you at Mobile.

After consulting with him, I do not see but that we must submit to litigation mainly for the reason that no one will buy the boats without- The case cited by Genl Canby seems fully to support his view that there is no defect in the title which would otherwise require to be remedied. But the effect is the same is if there were.

At the same time, I am altogether unwilling to give the claimants such advantage as the energy of a private interest often has over the engagements of a public office- for this reason I shall employ special council for the Bureau in aid of the District Attorney. I do not know any one in Mobile quite as likely to be successful all things considered as Judge McKinstry, and I shall write him this afternoon to ask him to see you in relation to it. I think that before the US Marshal is permitted on board, the existing proceedings had better be looked at to see if there be any thing which should first be differently adjusted.

Permit me to mention immediately that a letter sent-
