Major, In regard to the insane freedman John Hennessy confined in the jail at Linen, the General has conferred with the Governor. It is understood that the authorities at the Tuscaloosa Asylum are ready to receive the man.  You can furnish him transportation whenever it is thought best to send him.

Sir, 
I am as much obliged to you for your aid in bringing to light the nefarious transactions at Greenville, as I am chagrined at the existence of the facts. Had your aid came even earlier it would have been a material benefit to the Government, as well as to the poor.
Caption Arthur will return to Greenville this evening, and will take with him an officer and a file of men with instructions to take into custody Captain Steinberg and his clerk at Garland, and bring them to Montgomery for trial by Court Martial.
As to their accessories I am advised that their offence is not criminal by the laws of the United States, but that it is so by the State laws. 
I have instructed Captain Arthur that he will take immediate possession of all Government stores that can be found in the vicinity, and that if resisted he will at once proceed criminally against the holding in the name of the United States. 
And in this matter I wish you to act as his attorney particularly in the case of the man Freas who I am advised has a quantity of stores secreted in a wareroom which is closed. 
For this and whatever other service you can and will render Captain Arthur your proper charge will have prompt attention at this office, and you will receive our hearty thanks. An additional feature in the ugliness of this business so that a whole
