Rachel Kennedy a colored woman states that William Chancellor (or his Father) living near Wetumpka has in his possession a child of hers aged Thirteen (13) years, which he refuses to give up though the agreement between

herself and Mr. Chancellor was simply that the child should render Mr. C. two (2) weeks service commencing last Christmas. This statement is referred to you with a request that you will inquire into this case and inform these Head Quarters of the facts.

Dear Sir

At the time I received your note of the 4th inst. I was unable to reply otherwise than by telegraph, from an unnusual emergency of present bsuiness.

I was quite as much surprised as yourself when I learned the condition of the proceedings against the Bibb County Iron Works, and it occurs to me that such surprise will, as the facts became known, not be confined to myself.


I immediately addressed myself to the Judge as being with me in the service of a Common Government, whose honor and interest I deemed equally at stake. At the same time I procured the best counsel within my reach to see that all points of practice, with which I am not at all familiar, were carefully attended to. There was no difficulty in processing the desired extension, and I presume your interests have not been in any way unpaid.

At the same time, the judge, in a similar case, declared that when a sale had been effected in good faith, and the money lawfully applied to the use of the United States, his court should not be used as an instrument of arbitrary injustice to collect it a second time.
