Your communication of the 12" inst to the General asking as to a position in the Regular Army is received.  The General desires me to say that you were on the 21" Aug recommended by him for such a position and that he hopes when the Army list appears such recommendation will be found to have been not without effect.

In reply I have to say that Blankets, Clothes, Quinine, and Castor Oil, (though not perhaps in the quantities you desire) will be delivered to any duly accredited Agent you may send here for them.  Troy not being connected by Rail or River with this place, the articles cannot be forwarded by the Bureau.

I have the honor to enclose herewith six (6) blank orders Nos 152 to 157 inclusive for transportation to be used by you in extreme cases under Circular No 2 Current series from the Commissioner.  Transportation will be furnished on these orders by Capt Groves at Selma.  On the issue of each order you will report to this office the number and class of persons transported and to what place.

General Swayne desires me to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 13" inst in reference to the case of Geo Morrison now under sentence of death, and is gratified to know that a recommendation for commutation of sentence is being prepared by you.  An understanding is already had with the Governor that on the receipt of such a recommendation the sentence will be commuted.
