Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama
Montgomery Ala Dec 21st 1866

Smilie L.J. Esq
Justice of the Peace
Montgomery Co. Ala.

Sir

A contract between C. Threadgill and Mary Furzzle [(Col)] has been shown at this office in which it appears that said Mary was to receive one twenty fourth part of the crop raised on said Threadgills plantation, she being one of six (6) hands who worked the place. Mary states that the hands have received their share of the corn and potatoes but of the Cotton raised (10 Bales) none has been given the hands and that Threadgill refuses to give them their share. Daniel McNeil [(Col)] laborer on same place also states that he with his family furnished three (3) hands and was to receive one fourth of the crop that he also has not received his share of the Cotton. As you are the nearest civil Magistrate to the place where these people worked, I commit the case to you for adjudication. Enclosed I send for your information a copy of an amendment to the "Slay Law" passed at the last session of the Legislature. An early reply to this is requested.

Sir

Your communication of the 17" inst stating that you are in the claim business and desiring any influence in obtaining for you the business of collecting claims of colored soldiers for bounties &c and tendering one in return for said influence one half your fees, is received. In reply I have to say that there are about five thousand (5000) discharged colored soldiers in this State whose claims for bounty &c the Bureau is engaged in collecting free of charge. If in your opinion business conducted on such a principle would be remunerative you are at perfect liberty to engage in it here or elsewhere

Sir

A statement has been made at this office that Mr Thos. Glaze who lives near the South line of Chambers Co has in his possession a child named Virginia aged eleven (11) years the daughter of Wm Tucson (Col) who at present resides in this county. Tucson states that on the evening of the 19" inst he went to the house of Glaze desiring to take away his child, that Glaze refused to give it to him saying that it belonged to him (Glaze) and threatening Tucson with personal violence unless he left.

The General desires me to request you to have the child forwarded to this point with directions to report on arrival at this Office. Should Mr Glaze refuse to send her down here it will be necessary to proceed against him in the U.S. Court for his threats against Tucson. I enclose transportation for the child from Opelika which appears to be the nearest Railroad point to the place where Glaze lives.
